ya ol’ bag o’ bones (2014)

in summer 2014, i attended the white rabbit open air artist residency at red clay in rural nova scotia. it was a site-specific and land-responsive week of art-making on the shores of the bay of fundy. i worked with found materials, a deer skeleton, rusted flotsam from the ocean floor, natural dyes over an open fire, eco-printing, solar dyeing, and a biodegradable installation. the culmination of my week (and piece shared for the art festival at the end of the residency) was a knitted wool and wire installation built around the deer skeleton, with lit candles set into the skeleton burning down over the course of the evening (we had experienced huge amounts of rain through the week that turned the forest path into mud, making the live flames safe to use).
