the original penny dreadful told the stories of highwaymen, including that of the notorious dick turpin, an actual highway bandit who died in the 1700s. his horse, black bess, supposedly rode 200 miles between york and london in a single night.

while it’s unlikely that these socks will make your own feet quite so speedy, they are quick to knit up. their lace ribbing reflects the dirt paths and rivers that riders would have travelled back in the day to get from point a to point b. make them short or long depending on your own journey’s wishes.
